Quitting Smoking with Hypnotherapy
Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions that you can make for your life and your future but you already know this. We’ve known for decades that smoking has no benefits to our body whatsoever but as a society we still continue to light up day in day out.
As a smoker the idea of smoking has become ingrained into your life, it punctuates moments throughout your day, it’s there as a celebration tool, it’s there as a stress-reliever, it’s there without you even having to think about it.
And this is a huge part of the problem, you don’t even have to think about it.
Let’s say that you smoke 15 cigarettes every day, and let’s say that you’ve smoked for 10 years.
10 x 365 = 3650 days
3650 x 15 = 54,750 cigarettes.
Isn’t it truly incredible, and I mean this sincerely, that your brain has managed to remember to smoke 3,650 day in a row without forgetting a single time – amassing a truly breathtaking 54,750 cigarettes in that time.
Can you think of a single other thing in your entire life that you’ve managed to do that well and that consistently at?
I’m going to go with no.
Doing something so well and so easily means that it is not a decision which we are making consciously any more, it is a decision which is being made unconsciously – we are literally not thinking about doing it because it has become ingrained into our brains.
Following 2 failed attempts to stop smoking, I contacted Chris.
I can say the service he provides is truly professional and for me, 100% successful.
He also communicated with me in between sessions and gave me the support and encouragement I needed to complete my goal.
I would highly recommend his services.
“Unconsciously? That sounds a bit airy-fairy for me!”
As soon as you mention things like unconscious/subconscious some people instantly think you’re speaking about something woo-woo or fluffy but it’s really not, allow me to explain.
Do you remember learning to drive? Do you remember how terrifying things such as roundabouts were? You’d have to slow down, possibly stop, look to the right, check if there was traffic and how fast it was going, there might be a queue of annoyed drivers behind you. Then you have to pull away without stalling, keep in the correct lane as you go around the roundabout, make sure you signal, possibly change hear, indicate to leave the roundabout and then navigate your way off again.
All in about 10 seconds.
It was terrifying and daunting to most people.
But if you think now about the last time you drove anywhere you probably had to negotiate several roundabouts and the chances are you didn’t even think about them.
I’d bet good money that you’ve driven places sometimes and have had no recollection of the drive whatsoever; it’s almost as if you just arrived.
This is a prime example of your brain working unconsciously and hopefully makes you realise that talking about things happening unconsciously isn’t as far-fetched and “out there” as you might first think.
How quitting smoking with hypnotherapy works
Hopefully I’ve convinced you that smoking is something that you do unconsciously and hence you understand that whilst you can consciously decide you don’t want to smoke any more, consciously stopping yourself from smoking each and every cigarette you would normally smoke is much easier said than done.
Quitting smoking with hypnotherapy attacks the problem from a number of different angles, here are some examples:
- Allows you to communicate with the unconscious part of your brain to help find ways to stop the unconscious action happening.
- Build motivation but playing out imagined scenarios wherein you can see the benefits of quitting weighed against the risks of continuing.
- Suggestions can be made for cigarettes to smell or taste like the foods/smells that make you feel violently unwell.
- General relaxation
- Motivation
- Accountability
- Good quitting smoking practice
- Recognising lapse vs relapse
